日本において「ハーマン号（Hermann）」と記録されるアメリカの汽船が、1869年2月13日（明治2年1月3日）に千葉県勝浦市川津沖で座礁・沈没した事故。

熊本藩がチャーターし、米から江戸へ向かう途中であった。

この事故では、住民による懸命の救助活動が行われたが、多数の犠牲者が出た。 ）

Remembering loss and heroism in Chiba. Exactly 157 years after the SS Hermann sank in heavy seas off the coast of Katsuura, Consul Clark Ledger attended a memorial ceremony for the more than 250 Japanese and American lives lost in the tragedy. During the service, the consul recognized the courage of the local people who risked their own lives to rescue many of the passengers and crew.
